The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly approved an immediate ceasefire resolution in Gaza.

153 countries voted in favor of this resolution while 10 countries, including the US and Israel, opposed it. 23 countries including Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Holland and Ukraine remained absent. It is a ‘non-binding’ resolution.

This is the second such resolution by the United Nations General Assembly regarding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Earlier in October, the United Nations passed a resolution calling for a humanitarian pause in the war in Gaza. 121 members voted in favor of this resolution, 14 in opposition while 44 members did not participate in voting.

Palestine’s ambassador to the United Nations has said that the vote in favor of the cease-fire resolution is a historic day, sending a strong message from the United Nations General Assembly. While Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations has expressed concerns. He said that this resolution will allow Hamas to carry out operations for a longer period of time.

Only the US opposed the Gaza ceasefire resolution in the Security Council.
