The International Atomic Energy Agency has said that Iran has stockpiled 22 times more enriched uranium than the limit set in the nuclear deal JCPOA with Iran.
According to a confidential report of the Atomic Energy Agency, Iran has obtained enough enriched uranium up to 60%, which can make 3 atomic bombs.
What is JCPOA?
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is an agreement between the United States and other countries with Iran, known as the P5+1 (the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, and China, plus the European Union). This nuclear deal, also called the Iran Nuclear Deal, placed restrictions on Iran, preventing it from producing highly enriched uranium or weapons-grade plutonium that could be used in the development of nuclear weapons. Iran accepted this deal to avoid economic sanctions.
The P5+1 countries negotiated with Iran for 20 months, and the deal was finalized in 2015. In exchange for complying with the restrictions on its nuclear program, Iran was promised relief from certain economic sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union, and the United Nations Security Council.
On May 8, 2018, President Trump announced the United States’ withdrawal from the JCPOA. Following the U.S. withdrawal, the European Union enacted a law to nullify U.S. sanctions on countries trading with Iran.
In November 2018, the United States began imposing sanctions to pressure Iran over its policies and ballistic missile program.
In May 2019, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that Iran was still complying with the terms of the JCPOA.
In July 2019, Iran announced that it had exceeded the limits on enriched uranium set by the JCPOA.
On January 5, 2020, the United States conducted an airstrike at Baghdad International Airport, killing General Qasem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. In response, Iran announced its withdrawal from the nuclear deal.
