The press secretary of the Chinese Embassy in the US, while reacting to the US delegation’s visit to Taiwan in May, said that China is against it.

After the pro-US ruling party regained power in Taiwan, US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson announced that an American delegation would visit Taiwan in May this year.

When Liu Pengyu, secretary of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, was asked about this visit, he said:

“China is categorically against the US Congressional delegation visiting Taiwan, as well as any official contacts between the US authorities and the island.”

Liu presented the Chinese perspective on US military aid to Taiwan: “Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. China firmly opposes the US having any form of official contact with the Taiwan region,”

“The US needs to earnestly abide by the one-China principle and stipulations of the three China-US joint communiques, prudently and properly handle Taiwan-related issues, stop official contact with the Taiwan region, stop sending wrong signals to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces and refrain from interfering in elections in the Taiwan region in any form,” he added.

In August 2022, the Sino-US situation entered an explosive phase when then US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan.

A delegation of five Democratic Party members of the House accompanied Pelosi on the visit.

A week before this visit, there was a telephone conversation between Chinese President Xi and US President Biden. Xi warned Biden to stop Pelosi from visiting Taiwan and adhere to the One China policy. Xi told Biden that Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan would be like playing with fire. However, according to US officials, it is anyone’s right to visit Taiwan and they do not prevent anyone from exercising this right. Thus, Pelosi arrived in Taiwan.

Prior to Pelosi’s visit, China had imposed a complete blockade on Taiwan and fired a large number of missiles into Taiwan’s airspace. The world was holding its breath and fearing a great war, but these matters were settled amicably and the US announced that Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan was her personal act and had nothing to do with the US government.
