12 students died in boat sinking in India

A boat sank in a lake in the Indian state of Gujarat in which 14 people died.

According to sources, the school students had gone on a picnic in Vadodara, Gujarat, where they sat in a boat and visited a lake. The boat sank after some time, killing 12 students and 2 teachers.

The cause of the accident is not yet known, but eyewitnesses say that the boat was overcrowded. According to the allegations, “34 people, including 26 children, were boarded in a boat with a capacity of 14 people” and “most children and adults were not provided with life jackets.”
The incident occurred due to the overturning of the boat due to loss of balance.

The police have arrested two persons in connection with this incident.

The incident has grabbed headlines in the Indian media, and relatives of those killed have accused authorities of violating safety rules and endangering the lives of their children.

The Indian Prime Minister wrote on his X/Twitter account expressing regret over the incident
“Distressed by the loss of lives due to a boat capsizing at the Harni lake in Vadodara. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. May the injured recover soon. The local administration is providing all possible assistance to those affected. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.”

As soon as the boat sank, the rescue agencies received a distress call, on which the swept response personnel of the fire brigade immediately reached the spot and started the rescue operation. After the rescue personnel, the police also reached and participated in the rescue operations.

After much effort, the rescue personnel managed to save some people while 14 people died.
