Lloyd Austin mourns the death of Julius Becton, the first black commander of the US Army.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has expressed grief over the death of Julius Becton, the first black corps commander of the US Army.

In one of his tweets, Lloyd Austin says, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Lt. Gen. Julius W. Becton, Jr. He was the first Black commander of a U.S. Army corps and a devoted public servant whose integrity and professionalism inspired countless Americans. He was also a mentor and dear friend, and he will be missed.”

Julius Becton was born on June 29, 1926. He joined the Army in 1944. During his service, he served in World War II, Vietnam War and the Korean War.

Lt. Gen. Julius retired from the US Army in 1983. He died on 28 November 2023.
