Dutch authorities have arrested a Syrian man who ran a torture center.

A Syrian man has been arrested in the Netherlands today. According to sources, he used to run a torture center in Syria and later came to live in the Netherlands.

According to the statement of the relevant prosecution service, the accused was heading the interrogation department of the National Defense Force in Syria in 2013 and was involved in crimes committed against civilians in interrogation centers.

Prosecution service said in a statement: “The suspicion is that from this position the man committed acts of torture and sexual violence against civilians.”

The Syrian government created the National Defense Force on November 1, 2012 during the civil war.
Director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights Rami Abdulrahman says: “Fighters affiliated with the NDF committed major war crimes, especially in the early years of the war.”
