Pakistan’s Supreme Court has allowed the trial of civilians in military courts. Yesterday, a bench of five judges of the Supreme Court overturned the previous decision, which had prohibited trials of civilians in military courts.

In May, activists of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, PTI, started protests across the country after Imran Khan’s arrest. On May 9, protesters entered the Army’s main headquarters, GHQ, and the house of the Corps Commander of Lahore. In addition, the protesters vandalized an air force base and Radio Pakistan Peshawar.

Soon there was a severe crackdown on the PTI and many workers were arrested. Trials of those who entered military installations were started in military courts. However, the Supreme Court of Pakistan ruled that these trials were illegal. This decision was appealed and after a long hearing, the judges overruled the previous decision of other judges of the Supreme Court and made the trial of the civilians in the military courts legitimate.
