An unidentified man stabbed South Korean opposition leader Lee Jae-myung in the neck with a knife while he was visiting the South Korean city of Busan.

Police arrested the assailant and Lee was rushed to hospital, where his condition is said to be out of danger.

The President of South Korea has expressed regret on this incident. In a statement issued by the Presidential Office, the President has ordered an investigation into the incident as soon as possible.

“The president emphasized that this form of violence should not be tolerated under any circumstances in our society,” the statement said.

Mr. Lee narrowly lost the 2022 presidential elections. He is currently on trial for alleged bribery from his time as mayor of Seongnam. He denied all the charges against him and said that all these are political revenge.
