Pakistani election: HR organization and Amnesty International express concerns.

Ahead of Thursday’s parliamentary elections in Pakistan, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has called on Pakistani authorities to ensure fully free and fair voting. And renew your commitment to the democratic process.

This was done in a tweet shared by the X handle of UN Human Rights,
“Ahead of parliamentary election ‘in Pakistan’, we deplore all acts of violence against political parties & candidates.

UN Human Rights Chief Volker_Turk appeals to the Pakistani authorities to ensure free & fair vote, & to recommit to the democratic process.”

This statement has come amid complaints of harassment by authorities of Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI).

During a news briefing in Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights spokeswoman Liz Thrussell urged Pakistani authorities to ensure a completely free and fair trial.

Elizabeth Thrussell said the UN rights organization was concerned about a “pattern of harassment, arrests and prolonged detentions of leaders” against Imran Khan’s party and its supporters. He said that all eligible parties in Pakistan should be able to participate in the competition fairly

Imran Khan has been sentenced to a total of 34 years in prison after being found guilty in four cases. The court has also disqualified him from contesting elections. His party and supporters have claimed that this was a punishment for his rhetoric against Pakistan’s powerful army.

While the army says that Imran Khan and several members of his party are involved in inciting people against the army, including attacking, vandalizing and setting fire to army installations on May 9/2023.

A spokesperson for the UN human rights office said, “Ahead of Thursday’s parliamentary elections in Pakistan, we condemn all acts of violence against political parties and candidates, and urge the authorities to conduct a comprehensive and meaningful fundamental freedoms essential to the democratic process”.

On the other hand, Amnesty International has appealed to the ruling circles of Pakistan not to disrupt people’s access to the Internet during the election.Pakistani election: HR organization and Amnesty International express concerns.
