United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has criticized the absence of permanent representation in the United Nations Security Council for the African Union.

Guterres has said in a statement issued by Social Media X that international institutions must represent today’s world and not 80 years ago.

He has said that “till now there is not a single permanent member of the UN Security Council from Africa and how can it be accepted? The September summit will be an important opportunity to review the performance of the global administration and rebuild confidence.”

Guterres reiterated his call for a ceasefire and said, “I will not back down from calling for emergency humanitarian aid and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. People in Gaza are not only dying from bullets and bombs, they are also dying due to lack of food and clean drinking water and lack of electricity, and medicine. This situation must end now.”
In his statement,

Guterres drew attention to making major changes at the United Nations. None of the five permanent member countries of the Security Council belong to the continent of Africa. Thus, this great continent, which has been suffering from great difficulties for centuries, does not have a permanent representation at such a big forum.

Also, not a single country belonging to South America is a permanent member of the Security Council.

Some are already accusing the United Nations of being a World War II victors’ club. Their point of view is that if any one of the United States, Britain, France, Russia, and China rejects something, the opinion of the other members of the Security Council and the entire General Assembly becomes ineffective.

In the last century, there was a movement in the Muslim world to make a Muslim country a permanent member of the Security Council, but this movement failed.

Apart from this, India, the most populous country in the world, is also making efforts for permanent membership.

Guterres also spoke about the situation in Gaza apart from the lack of permanent membership of the African continent. According to him, the war should end now.

  1. I loved even more than you could possibly be able to accomplish right here. The picture is beautiful, and your language is elegant; yet, it appears that you are rushing through it, and I believe that you ought to give it another shot in the near future. That is something that I will most likely do again and again if you protect this hike.
