The Economic Community of West African States condemned the failed coup in Sierra Leone on November 26, 2023.

It is said in the statement issued by ECOWAS: “On Sierra Leone, the Authority [of Heads of States] strongly condemns the attempted coup d’état on 26th November 2023, that has led to loss of life and destruction of property and urges the judicial instances to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the events, with a view to identifying and bringing the perpetrators to justice,”

On November 26, the Sierra Leonean president imposed a nationwide curfew and ordered citizens to stay at home following initial reports of gunfire and a breakdown in law and order in the city. However, reports later emerged that it was a coup. . Police Commissioner William Cello said: “We have opened an investigation into a failed coup attempt. A group of people tried to overthrow the current government using force.”

The shooting in the city left 21 people dead, including 14 security personnel and 3 others assailants . On November 28, some military personnel were arrested on charges of plotting to overthrow the government.
ECOWAS condemned the coup and demanded punishment for those responsible.
