A bill is under discussion in Uganda to set the time for sale of alcohol. According to the bill, the sale of alcohol after 10 PM on weekdays will be prohibited and all bars will have to close before 10 PM. And if anyone caught selling alcohol during the prohibited time, he will have to pay a fine of 20 million shillings or go to jail for up to ten years.

According to the Secretary General of the Uganda Alcohol Industry Association, Tahakanezbwa, restricting the time of sale of alcohol will harm consumers, industrial workers and farmers.

He says “This restriction on working hours has the potential to affect about 1,300,000 jobs and the livelihoods of approximately 6,300,000 people across the whole value chain, including manufacturers, grain growers, distributors, pubs, and clubs.”
