BMW developed first hydrogen-powered aircraft with VTOL capabilities.

The German luxury car company BMW has developed the world’s first hydrogen-powered aircraft.

This aircraft is capable of taking off and landing vertically, which means it does not need a runway and can take off and land from roofs of vertical buildings or other small spaces.

This aircraft is a revolution because current helicopters and other such aircraft usually run on jet fuel, which is a fossil fuel and its combustion emits greenhouse gases that harm the environment.

But hydrogen is a clean fuel, releasing only water vapor when burned. This means that this aircraft will not harm the environment.

How does this plane work?

The aircraft has four electric motors powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Fuel cells combine hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity. This electricity then drives the motors, which turn the propellers and fly the plane.

What are its benefits..?

  • It is environment friendly as it runs on hydrogen which is a clean fuel.
  • It has no noise or sound because it is powered by electric motors.
  • It is more efficient because hydrogen gives more energy than jet fuel.
  • Most importantly, it can take off and land vertically, which means it doesn’t need a runway and can take off and land from small spaces.

How long will it be available..?

The company has not yet announced when the aircraft will be available to the general public. However, it is the first aircraft that runs on hydrogen.


Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) aircraft can take off and land vertically. Due to these features, such aircraft do not require a runway.

The first civil aircraft to come out with such features was the XV-15.
This aircraft completed its first flight in 1977. In addition to the X-15, Convair XFY-1 Pogo in flight and the Ryan X-13 are civil aircrafts capable of vertical take-off and landing.

Such planes were built long ago for military purposes. In the 1950s, the Harrier Jump jet was developed which was equipped with the same features. Then the technology progressed and better VTOL aircraft than the Harrier came out, such as the F-35 Lightning B and C.
But the Harrier is the first aircraft in this field and it will always have this honor.
